2008-2009 Men's Indoor Schedule
Sunday, Oct. 19th - Seattle, WA (3rd out of 14 Teams)
A nice start for the region and an "interesting" one for the Madman Club this year. With several last year members spread out among several different teams we had a little bit of a struggle with a somewhat odd line-up for this first event. Great regional support with 14 teams in the mix and some very competitive play. We went 6-4 on the day in games and lost to Island Style in the semi-finals. We had an injury end one of our players day after the first match an another who had to leave prior to tournament. That being said of our final 6 only 1 player had even seen the back row the previous season. Despite that fact I thought we played well. My MVP award for the day is a split with Tony Little who carried much of the offense for the day and Matt Leicester who played a bunch of positions, proved to be one of the better passers and overall just played great.
Players: Matt Weaver, Alan Wittren, Tony Little, Bryce Anson, Jay Phillips, Bernardo Dunn, Sergey Royt, Matt Leicester

Madman Volcano (3rd of 11): A great way for the region to start its formal season with a packed house of 15 men's teams for the day. We went 6-4 on the day (once again) in games and lost to tournament champs Whitaker Painting in a tight semi-finals 23-25, 24-26. We used another new line-up, no suprise there, and really started to gel by the end as we played our best matches by far in the elimination rounds. I thought we played well and certainly improved as the day wore on. My MVP award for the day is a split again between the 2 middles as Bryce dominated the next in playoffs and Alan was hitting the ball about as hard as I have seen him do so off of my sets ever for the day.

Madman Tornado (9th of 11): A tough go for the Tornado guys to start as they went 1-7 on the day and just could not seem to put a whole game together from what I saw while watching. They look like they are about 1-2 players short of a huge step up and being competitive with most if not all of the regional teams. Captain's MVP award for this one goes to Matt Hopper for his solid play and continued great attitude.
Players: Matt Leicester, Matt Hopper, Maurice Ramsey, Odin Neumann, Jordan Bailey, Doug Wang, Tim Dozal, Kris Volpenhein

Sunday, Dec. 20th - Tacoma, WA
Madman Volcano (5th of 7): A really tough day as we struggled to just win a few games with a patchwork squad plus a new sub each game. Better things to come when the whole roster is available!! MVP goes to Tony Little for his extreme patience all day long.

Madman Tornado (1st of 7): The 1-2 players extra seem to be there as Madman took home its first tournament win of the season!! Great passing and team play all day helped them cruise through pool and playoffs to win a 3-game thriller over regional heavyweight Island style with a stuff block by Matt Leicester capping the action. Captain's MVP award for this one goes to Matt Adams for his solid play as a great addition to the team.

Madman Volcano (1st of 9): Back to back tournament wins for Madman squads in the events they have played recently!! Having the whole roster there was key as we were able to maximize our rotations and really get the blocking going by the end. We went 10-2 on the day as we eeked out a 3-game marathon with Island Style to take home to top prize. MVP goes to Bryce Anson for his dominating performance at the net and just overall great play. It has been really fun to watch Bryce continue to grow into one of the really dominant players in the region over the last year or so, keep up the great work big guy!!

Madman "The Deuce" (7th of 9): A tough go for Madman Deuce as the struggeld to find their consistancy in pool to drop to the lower bracket where they cleaned house to take the tournament there. My "director's" MVP without question goes to Maurice Ramsey for this one. He is the catalyst that even makes this team possible and I know personally the pains he goes through to help field the team. He also has been playing as well as I have ever seen him this season to date and expect more of the same as the season continues.

Madman Volcano (2nd of 12): Another great day of play as we made it back to the finals in consecutive tournaments only to fall to IBT (formerly SDM) in a close 3-game set. We went 9-2 on the day with the finals being our only losses. MVP goes to Tad Hussey and Chris Costa for filling in the squad for the day. It was great to play with both of these guys whom I have known for years and they did a great job holding down the OH and passing duties for the entire day.

Madman "The Deuce" (5th of 12): The "Deuce" continued to improve as they fought through a tough pool to go 4-2 and go up to the upper bracket where they lost a close set to a tough No Game team. Going 4-4 on the day with all losses coming to the tournament champs and another semifinalist, not too shabby at all. Coach's MVP goes to Sunny Lin for this one. He provided great defense and passin for the entire day and certainly helped raise the play level for the whole day.

Madman Volcano (2nd of 5): A solid day of play as we made it back to the finals in our 3rd consecutive tournaments only to fall short once again, this time to a combo of the Bellingham guys and Island Style. We went 9-3 on the day with our only losses coming to the team that won the event. MVP goes to Maurice Ramsey for filling in great for our team for the day. He played really solid, some of the best defense I have seen from him in years and was hitting great.

Regional Power League #1
Madman Goucho (5th of 9): A tough way to start the regional power league for the Gouchos. Some new faces and injuries caused for another new lineup for the day and the expected issues that go along with that. We went 4-4 on the day with our losses coming to the 3rd/4th place teams by the end. MVP goes to Brian Causey and Craig Middlebrooks for joining in on this event and playing so well in their first USAV debutes in quuite some time.

Madman Duece (2nd of 9): A great start to the regional power league for "The Duece" as they took the tournament by storm winning their pool and sending the always tough It's Buisness Time (IBT) almost to the lower bracket. Without a late schedule change they would have gone down. 7-3 overall on the day with the only losses coming 1 game to IBT in pool and in the finals versus champs Island Style. Captain's MVP goes to Kris Volpenhein for playing so solidly all day. I think his presence is one of the major reasons the team is playing so well and really starting to reach their potential.
Players: Matt Leicester, Odin Neumann, Patrick Henley, Jay Phillips, Maurice Ramsey, Matt Adams, Matt Hopper, Kris Volpenhein
Sunday, March 15th - Skyline HS Issaquah, WA
Madman Goucho (3rd of 8): An overall solid day for the Gouchos on this tournament. We went 6-5 on the day with all but one of our losses coming to the undefeated tournament champs. MVP goes to Todd Moore on this day for what I felt was some amazing defense and great overall passing for the tournament.

Madman Duece (3rd of 8): Another very solid finish for "The Duece" as they fought the entire day to finish 3rd out of a very tough tournament field. 7-6 overall on the day. Captain's MVP goes to Tom Larsen who was willing to jump in on very late notice and more then hold is own at the MH position for "the Duece". Great playing Tom!!
Players: Matt Leicester, Tom Larsen, Patrick Henley, Jay Phillips, Maurice Ramsey, Matt Adams, Matt Hopper, Kris Volpenhein
Saturday, March 21st - Highline CC Des Moines, WA
Madman Cubed (1st of 3): A very low-key but fun way to try and get a 3rd Madman team started. The goal is to have this squad captained by Jordan Bailey by the end of the season and get in as many events as possible. Obviously not the best field but we had a great time and some competitive games. 7-2 overall on the day. My MVP award goes to Chris Costa who played great all day in the OH slot and was simply dropping bombs from there by the finals. Thanks to everyone who attended for making this a REALLY fun event for me.

Regional Power League #2
Madman Goucho (3rd of 12): What can I say? Another solid outing as we play tough through pool and lose a very competitive semi-finals to Island Style (Tourney Champs). We went 7-3 on the day with one loss to our other Madman Team (finished 4th) and the other 2 losses losses coming Island Style. MVP goes to Jesse Paulson on this day for being in my opinion the single best hitter at the tournament. He dropped some serious bombs all day long. Great to have you on our side JP!!

Madman Duece (4th of 12): Continuing to show that they are no fluke this season "The Duece" finishes the day in 4th place going 7-4 overall for the day. Their 4 losses were split between the teams that finished 2nd (IBT) and 3rd (Gouchos) just ahead of them on the day. A split captain's MVP goes to Matt Hopper and Jess Denton for their hard work and good play all day. It sure is fun to watch Jess continue to harness those crazy physical skills of his. Nobody that big should jump that HIGH!!! Antoher great showing guys, I am certainly proud to have you represent the club in such a great way.

Regional Power League #3
Madman Goucho (5th of 10): More of the same up-down play from Madman Gouchos this year. Losing to some teams we have been good against in pool play while managing to beat Island Style and still go down in the brackets. We went 6-4 on the day overall. MVP goes to Jesse Paulson on this day for the second straight tournament. A new position, same result, a dominant hitting performance and a nice touch as we added a big influx of "D" balls to help bail us out of some sticky rotations.

Madman Duece (3rd of 10): "The Duece" finishes another day of great play in 3rd place going 3-5 overall for the day, winning the games they had to. A nice comeback win versus Diesel and beating the Gouchos pushed them to the upper bracket. They fell to Island Style in a close match and then got No Game in another nice game to take 3rd overall. With this finish they have all but ensured themselves $$ from finishing within the top 3 in the league. Great job guys!! MVP goes to Kris Volpenhein for maintaining his cool with slow start to the day and helping take this team to the next level this year.

Regional Power League #4
Madman Goucho (2nd of 9): Certainly a nice way to finish the Power League on a better note after struggling with consistancy most of the season. We went 8-4 on the day overall, losing a close final in 3 to regional powerhouse Island Style. Nice to take a least a game from them as well as beat IBT 2-1 in pool play to send them to the tough half of the bracket for once. MVP goes to Chris Costa on this day for some awesome offense to help carry us to a first place pool finish and then switching to libero in tournament to solidify apssing in our run to the finals. A great guy and a really solid player all the way around.

Madman Duece (4th of 9): "The Duece" finishes another day of great play in 4th place going 6-3 overall for the day, winning their pool handily and coming up a little short versus Island Style in the semifinals. With this finish and the Gouchos falling in the finals they have ensured themselves $$ from finishing within the top 3 in the league. Great job guys, I could not be happier for one of the Madman groups to finish in the money for the 2nd straight year!! MVP goes to Matt Hopper who has maintained a great attitude and positive outlook despite a scattered season with a TON of pisitions and roles for him. He has been a great addition to the Madman crew since its inception and this year has certainly proved to be no different.
Players: Matt Leicester, Jess Denton, Patrick Henley, Jay Phillips, Maurice Ramsey, Matt Hopper, Kris Volpenhein
Saturday, May 16th - Mountlake Terrace, WA
Puget Sound Regional Men's Championship
Madman Goucho (3rd of 8): A fairly solid way to finish the regional season of men's indoor volleyball. We went 87-2 on the day overall, losing 2 close games to the finalists Island Style and IBT. For the most part where we have ended almost all of our events this season in the region in the 3-4 slot. Not having a real consistant roster has certainly not helped our cause in cracking into more finals. MVP goes to Alan Wittren on this day for some awesome offense, blocking and his usual fun attitude. He helped us at 2 positions on the day, really important as we were rolling with only 6 for the event. A great guy, he will ceratinly be missed at the nationals tournament this year.
